The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has taken various measures towards redressal of grievances of the Indian women who have been deserted by the overseas spouses.
These measures are as follows:
i) The Ministry introduced a Scheme for the Indian women deserted by their NRI husbands in 2007 under the Scheme, the women deserted by their overseas Indian husbands were given an assistance of US$ 1500 per case.
ii) The Scheme was reviewed and certain amendments further liberalizing the Scheme was introduced in 2011. Under the reviewed Scheme, a deserted Indian woman is now given an assistance of US$ 3000 per case in developed countries and US$ 2000 per case in developing countries. Now the women who are domiciled in India, in the wake of their desertion, are also eligible for assistance.
iii) The revised Scheme has also taken into account the suggestions made by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and is being implemented in Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Kuwait, Malaysia, Zealand, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. Singapore, UK, USA
iv) The Ministry also extends legal/financial support to Indian women for various purposes from the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). The various Indian Missions/Posts abroad also provide assistance such as counseling, financial assistance from the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) etc.
v) During the year 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and the current year, more than 450 women have been assisted by the Government through various measures such as financial and personal resources available with the Indian Missions, the Ministry`s scheme for assistance, ICWF etc,
