Promotion of various disciplines of sport is the responsibility of the National Sports Federations (NSFs) concerned. The Governmentsupplement their efforts by way of providing financial assistance for conducting international competitions abroad, holding international events in India , conducting National Championships, purchase of equipments, conducting coaching camps etc. No separate financial assistance is given to any State for sports activities. This was stated by Shri Ajay Maken, Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs & Sports, in the Rajya Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Shri Shantaram Naik.
Details of financial assistance given, during the last five years, to the Federations for the water sports are as under:-

The Minister stated that since ‘Sports’ is a State subject, the State Governments are competent to legislate in the matter. However, the Government of India has framed the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 to bring in transparency and accountability in the functioning of the various National Sports Federations for healthy development of sports which is also applicable to the NSFs for water sports, the Minister added.
