Shri Srikant Kumar Jena, Minister of State (Independent charge), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation announced the release of the monthly provisional Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Base 2010=100 along with annual inflation rates for June 2012, compiled by the Central Statistics Office.
All India provisional General (all groups) CPI numbers of June 2012 for rural, urban and combined are 120.6, 118.5 and 119.7 respectively.
Shri Jena said that the provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general CPI (Combined) for June 2012 on point to point basis (June 2012 over June 2011) is 10.02%. The corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas are 9.74% and 10.44%.
Inflation rates (final) for rural, urban and combined for May 2012 are 9.57%, 11.52% and 10.36% respectively. Decline in the inflation rate for the urban areas in June 2012 as compared to May 2012 is attributed to the higher base of the Housing Group index for June 2011 as compared to May 2011. For compilation of house rent index, rent data are collected from the sample of rented dwellings (distributed over six months) once in six months. House rent data for six months period are therefore required for computation of house rent index. Housing Group index for June 2011 included the rent index compiled using the rent data for the period January 2011 to June 2011, which was the first six months period after the base year of January 2010 to December 2010.
